Abstract: In this thesis, we describe the preparation of narrow bandwidth heralded single photons from a photon pair source based on nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a cold atomic ensemble via a cascade decay scheme. We observe an instantaneous photon detection rate of up to 18000 per second and an optical bandwidth below 30 MHz. The statistics of the photons shows strong antibunching with a value for the second order correlation at zero delay less than 0.03, indicating a near single photon character. In an optical homodyne experiment, we directly measure the temporal field envelope of these photons. We then show how coupling the heralding photon into an asymmet-ric Fabry-Perot cavity reverses the temporal shape of the heralded photon from a decaying to a rising exponential envelope. A single photon with such an exponentially rising temporal envelope would be ideal for interacting with single atoms.
