Abstract: VACUUM PRELOADING COUPLED WITH PREFABRICATED VERTICAL DRAINS (PVDS), IS A VIABLE GROUND IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUE FOR THE STABILIZATION OF SOFT CLAY DEPOSITS. THE RESEARCH WORK FOCUSSED ON LABORATORY DETERMINATION OF COEFFICIENT OF HORIZONTAL CONSOLIDATION, CH, THE IMPORTANT PARAMETER IN THE DESIGN OF VERTICAL DRAINS SYSTEM. THE INFLUENCES OF DRAINAGE BOUNDARY (RADIALLY-IN AND RADIALLY-OUT CONSOLIDATION TEST) AND TYPE OF CONSOLIDATION CELL (ROWE?S CELL AND CONVENTIONAL CELL) ON CH, WERE INVESTIGATED. EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL STUDIES TO UNDERSTAND THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION AND PORE PRESSURE DISSIPATION DURING CONSOLIDATION OF CLAY UNDER DIFFERENT RADIAL DRAINAGE WERE ARE ALSO CARRIED OUT. THE EXPERIMENTAL EXAMINATION OF ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF SOIL BEFORE AND AFTER SURCHARGE AND VACUUM CONSOLIDATION WERE ARE ALSO CARRIED OUT. THE CENTRIFUGE MODELLING AND NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF SOFT CLAY UNDER VACUUM CONSOLIDATION WITH SAND SEAM BENEATH PVD WERE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMUM PENETRAT
