Abstract: This thesis describes the measurement of the nuclear magnetic octupole moment of <sup>137</sup>Ba. The measurement utilizes rf spectroscopy and optical shelving to chart the hyperfine structure of meta-stable 5D states in <sup>137</sup>Ba and provided the most precise value of the nuclear magnetic octupole moment in any atom to date.
